Zoom, Google Meets, Microsoft Teams, and the telephone…all are platforms we have been using to allow our mentors to connect with their mentees. For a while I would have moments of concern thinking mentoring wasn’t happening, but a few emails and texts later, mentors and counselors confirmed that it IS happening and things are working. Some schools have not been able to manage the current format, but many their mentors continue to write mentees letters.
A huge amount of relief and comfort has been conveyed to the children in having their mentor there to listen to the worries of the year and to encourage them that things will get better. Socially shy kids, who have done well in online school, share their concern about being back in person. In contrast, our extroverted kids can’t wait to be able to see their mentors again. With only a few weeks left before summer break, we are so grateful to all the schools who have worked so hard to make reconnecting mentors and mentees a priority in their program. We have ~30 requests for mentors from our various school districts. We would love to have mentors trained and ready to match with these children when school starts up again in August. If you or someone you know has an interest in investing 1 hour a week of your life in the life of a child, we would love to have you mentor with us. Please contact us HERE for more information.
Remember, be kind!
