The Mentoring Network: Where to Get Your Presence
The shopping season is in full swing and we thought it worthwhile to give you three tips as to where to get your presence. Contrary to some views, presence isn’t something free. Like anything worthwhile it comes with a cost, but it’s one of the greatest gifts you can give to someone you care about. Here are our tips:
Turn off your phone. Answering machines are wonderful and can be checked at a later time. You can then be present for a conversation. Eye contact with a child, family, or friend is as great a gift as listening with full concentration to what they say.
When you turn your phone back on, use it to call someone you’ve been thinking about. Maybe it’s an old classmate, a grandparent, an aunt, an old friend. Call someone who’s been on your mind and listen when they tell you how they are doing. Tell them you care about them. They might not know.
Be still. Be quiet. Spend some of your time to just listening without worrying about your agenda. Time is precious and it is all too easily wasted on things that won’t matter in a week or so. Prioritize eternal things. Wishing you the blessings of the Christmas season. May you be present in all you do. Do you have other tips for where to get your presence? We’d love to hear them!
